What is empirical research?

Answer

Empirical research is research using empirical evidence. Which doesn't help at all, does it? Let's back up a bit. Empirical means something based on verifiable testing or experience. It's the opposite of pure theory. So empirical research includes things such as the methodology used to address the research question. The research can be either qualitative or quantitative, but it's usually published in a format that includes the process used in collecting the data.
